HOWARD UNIVERSITY.

99

MEDICAL FACULTY.

The following table gives names, titles,

dates of appointment, &c., of the Instruc

tors in the Medical, Dental and Pharmaceu

tical Colleges, and in the order of appoint

ment. The names, titles, &c., of Instruc

tors in the Training School for Nurses

have already been given on page 72, and

of the personnel of the Hospital on pages

75 to 77.

The table has been made up from the

records of the Board of Trustees, Execu

tive Committee and Faculty. Unfortu

nately the Executive Committee record

1867-74 and the minutes of the Faculty

from February 27, 1878, to March 1,

1886, have not been found; which ex

plains the omission of some dates. The

list includes the names of a few who,

although appointed, did not serve.

The names of Dr. T. C. Smith and

Miss Ebersole have also been included,

although they were not appointed by the

Medical Faculty or University authorities.

Dr. Smith, as one of the three Hospital

Consultants for six years (Hood, J. T.

Johnson and Smith), and because of his

marked friendship to the Medical Depart

ment ; and Miss Ebersole as Superintend

ent of Nurses for the same period and es

pecially during the pupilage of the Nurses

of the Medical Department, both deserve

to be included, and as was said (page 45),

in regard to placing soap and candles in

a subsistence report, “ there is no other

place to put them” than here.

The letter M. prefixed to a date indi

cates that it is the date of a Medical

Announcement; U. C., the date of

a University Catalogue.

The letters

T. S. N. stand for Training School for

Nurses.

With rare exceptions the Executive

Committee approved the recommenda

tions of the Faculty, and the Trustees

those of the Committee. In a very few

cases the initiative was taken by the

Trustees or Committee ; in one of these

the Faculty protest was so prompt and em

phatic that the appointment was at once

revoked. Since the discontinuance of

regular salaries, in 1873, the selection of

instructors in the Medical Department

has been practically in the hands of the

Faculty, approval by the Committee and

Trustees merely perfunctory.

Following the table are the individual

sketches of the members of the Faculty

in the same order of appointment. Some

are very regrettably brief; in a few cases

little or no information has so far been

obtained. The subjects of study taught

by each individual appear in italics at

the beginning of his sketch.
